What's The Buzz: Bee Breath

Writer's picture: Pam NiccumPam Niccum

Is your busy-bee mind getting the best of you? Have you ever heard of bee breathing?

This super easy breathing technique stimulates the vagus nerve and increases nitric oxide production. What the hell does that mean?

The vagus nerve is responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions such as digestion, heart rate, respiratory rate, and more.

Nitric oxide is essential to blood vessel dilation, stimulation of hormone release, and regulation of neurotransmission (the transfer of information between the brain and nervous system).

These in turn have the power to deliver the following benefits:

  • Calm and soothe anxiety

  • Increase focus and concentration

  • Improve ventilation and drainage of the sinuses

  • Increase blood flow and lower blood pressure

  • Make you feel happy

I like this simplified version for when I’m out and about, or driving, and need to calm myself. I find it soothing and will repeat several times, often letting my hum get a little louder each time.

This expanded version requires the hands, so I don’t recommend while driving. 🤪 In all seriousness though, it brings a bit more intensity in the best way. By plugging the ears and covering the eyes, eliminating some of the senses, focus increases on the calming effects of the hum.
