Play 🤝 Doodling

There are many different definitions of "Play" but they all circle back around to this: purposeless engagement in an activity for enjoyment. Play is doing something JUST FOR FUN. No other reason, no expectations, no rules (well, depending upon your outlet of play - sports & games do have some rules). I think as adults we get caught up in to-do lists and expectations (sometimes self induced) and forget to continue doing things just because we want to. Life is short! Take some time this week to boost your happy hormones by tapping in to what is fun for you!

There are many ways to tap in to your playful side and do something fun. Just one idea is to get crafty/creative: art like the earth depends on it! Because it does. A simple way to do this while still honoring “play” is to doodle. There are numerous studies and articles on the benefits of doodling, here’s a few examples:

  • Stress reduction/relaxation

  • Mood regulation

  • Memory recall

  • Creativity

  • Problem solving

  • Mind-Body connection: clear the head!

Unsure where to start? Here’s a few ideas! Most importantly, release attachment to the outcome and try to enjoy the process. There’s definitely a metaphor for life there…

  • Write down a word or thought that’s ruminating, transform each letter into something new and continue building out from there.

  • Section off a piece of paper and add a different design into each section.

  • Draw a simple symbol (star, heart, circle, triangle, etc.) and just see where the brain wants to go from there. Keep filling the page!

  • Literally free form: place your utensil to paper and close the eyes. Where does the hand want to go? Lines, waves, circles, loopty loops, scribble, scratch, fill your page! (and maybe put down a placemat in case you go off the page)
