Just Breathe

How often do you stop to just breathe?! There is breathing that happens autonomously, and then there is breathing with conscious awareness. Simply bringing awareness to the breath can help to calm the nervous system. When the nervous system can become calm, the mind and body follow suit. In this state of calm we are able to find rest. Although we (as a human collective) are not great at rest, it is extremely beneficial for us. There are countless studies to prove it!

I'm currently reading Breath by James Nestor, where he shares lots of fun information about not only the importance of breath, but specifically breathing through the nose and how it contributes to the shape of our jaw and face! Fascinating stuff!

According to one article from Integris Health: "Rest is vital for better mental health, increased concentration and memory, a healthier immune system, reduced stress, improved mood and even a better metabolism." Which takes me to root of this Breathe category and why it's so important to me. It's about encouraging a moment to bring yourself to a state of calm.

While watching TV, reading a book, playing a video game, etc. can seem relaxing, they are still stimulants with which we are generally more focused on what's happening than how we're responding to it. Depending on the content, these activities can actually have the opposite effect of rest for the nervous system.

Take a breather, a moment just for you - to simply breathe. Start by noticing the breath: the temperature of the inhale, and how it transforms on the exhale. Follow the breath, where do you feel it move through the body? Does it feel deep or shallow, easy or restricted? Pause. In this moment of present awareness, allow space to reconnect with your inner being.

With practice the pause for breath will come more easily, more naturally. Without notice one day you'll pause before responding to someone or reacting to a situation, or pause and notice a feeling allowing an opportunity to create separation between you and it.

Breath awareness is simply one form of rest - but with it being so easy and readily available to you at all times, why wouldn't you try it?? Just breathe.
